The Carbon Positive House at Grand Designs Live 2007 in London

Carbon Positive House

For the first time ever, visitors to Grand Designs Live (8-10 June 2007, ExCeL London) will have the opportunity to explore one of the UK's first Carbon Positive homes built by Baufritz, which will be located on Royal Victoria Square outside London ExCeL's west entrance.

The Baufritz house, on display at this year's show, is carbon positive to the extent that each house stores at least 50 tonnes more CO2 than is emitted during its lifecycle - the equivalent of a family saloon car driving 6,200 miles per year, every year for 20 years. With most housing acting like carbon factories, producing 25 per cent of our carbon emissions, this show feature is bound to be a hot topic at this year's event and well into the future.

The two-storey house has a stunning and contemporary design, which has focused on creating a comfortable environment for the occupants, with a level of luxury many would not associate with an 'eco-friendly' home. It will be built entirely from bio-constructive, efficient and natural materials meaning this house will be 100% biodegradable.

In addition to its superb green credentials, the house will also embrace the Baufritz philosophy of healthy living. The Baufritz Carbon Positive House will be made entirely from non-chemically treated building materials and natural products, using building components that ensure good ventilation and protection from harmful electromagnetic radiation (known as electrosmog) to provide a better quality of day to day living.

The house will be fully furnished and complemented with a landscaped sustainable garden, designed by expert and UKTV presenter, Hannah Genders. Visitors to the show will see how a house can be healthy, ecological and beautifully designed to create a unique living environment.

Oliver Rehm, Managing Director, Baufritz, said, "Grand Designs Live provides a great opportunity to showcase an example of the carbon positive homes that we are now building in the UK. Throughout the build process, from conception to construction, we do everything we can to reduce the impact a new home has on the environment. By combining the latest in modern building technology with our long heritage of building with timber we create homes that have a greatly reduced carbon footprint when compared to a conventional home built from bricks and mortar. "

"We're looking forward to seeing how people react to the house. Many have a preconception that eco-friendly homes can't be sleek and sophisticated let alone good for your health - our house will certainly challenge this."
