Baufritz eco home is short listed for two prestigious awards

Cambridge based ecological design and build company, Baufritz has been short listed for two awards by the highly regarded Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine. Sponsored by the Daily Telegraph these prestigious annual awards showcase the very best in individual home building and the Baufritz house has been short listed in two categories; for best eco home and best timber home.

Baufritz is a pioneer in ecological house construction that launched its services in the UK last year to meet the increasing demand for eco friendly housing.  The house that has been short listed is the very first carbon positive house to be built in the UK.  Built in Trevone Bay near Padstow in Corwall, this house is a unique combination of traditional design teamed with the latest in modern construction technology.

The house is extremely energy efficient.  The combination of wood stove, solar panels and bore-hole providing fresh spring water from beneath the house means that the Nicholls expect that their utility bills will be only a few hundred pounds per year.

The walls of the house are incredibly thick, up to 40cm (as is standard in all Baufritz homes) and packed with Baufritz’s patented wood shaving insulation which is proven to be highly efficient. Because the wood shavings are made from cut offs from the manufacturing process they are also environmentally friendly.

The walls feature a breathable cavity which, whilst keeping warm air in, also allows moisture out allowing a constant filter of fresh air, making the living environment comfortable and fresh.  Air tightness is a crucial factor in any home energy consumption. Baufritz design each home with windows and doors already in place, the fit is perfect, resulting in excellent air tightness.

In terms of health; to protect the health of the residents, Baufritz has developed “XUND-E” - a protective shielding concept, which dramatically reduces the amount of electromagnetic radiation penetrating the home which does not interfere with electronics such as cordless phones and baby monitors. The XUND-E plate comprises a thin layer of carbon with a layer of natural gypsum, which is then applied to the walls and roofs and then earthed. This innovative product is fitted as standard to all Baufritz homes.

In addition, to keep a constant supply of fresh air to its homes, Baufritz has developed its own multi-climatic system, which is incorporated into the walls of the house. This system ensures that each room is heated, cooled and supplied with fresh, filtered and pollution free air, as required room by room, further enhancing the health of the occupants of the house.
